Brand Identity for a Community Hub

A Brand Designed to Inspire, Connect and Support the Community
A successful brand is about far more than creating an attractive logo. It is the personality of an organisation, the first impression people experience and the visual language that brings every interaction together. A well-developed brand creates recognition, builds trust and gives people confidence before a single conversation takes place.
When Bury Council launched the Bury Works NeighbourHub within Mill Gate Shopping Centre, the ambition was to create a welcoming and inclusive community space that would support people at every stage of life. Whether visitors were looking to develop new skills, explore employment opportunities, access advice or simply connect with local services, the NeighbourHub was designed to become a place where people could learn well, work well and live well.
Hypa Concept was appointed to create the complete brand identity for the project. Our role extended far beyond designing a logo. We were responsible for developing a cohesive branding system that would define the personality of the NeighbourHub and ensure every interaction with the public reflected the same welcoming, approachable and professional identity. From the logo and colour palette through to bespoke illustrations, marketing templates and environmental graphics, every element was carefully considered to create a consistent and memorable brand experience.
Understanding the Vision
Unlike many branding projects, the NeighbourHub had no existing visual identity to evolve. This was a completely new initiative with an opportunity to establish a recognisable brand from the very beginning. The challenge was to create an identity that felt modern and professional while remaining warm, inclusive and accessible to a diverse audience.
The NeighbourHub welcomes young people taking their first steps into education or employment, adults looking to develop new skills, families seeking support and older members of the community wanting to remain active and connected. Designing for such a broad audience required a careful balance between professionalism and personality. The branding needed to communicate confidence while ensuring everyone felt welcome the moment they encountered it. This understanding shaped every creative decision throughout the project and ensured the finished identity reflected the values at the heart of the initiative.
Creating a Complete Brand Identity
Branding is often misunderstood as simply designing a logo. In reality, a successful brand is a complete visual system that creates consistency across every platform, every environment and every customer interaction.
For the Bury Works NeighbourHub, we developed a complete brand identity that provides the flexibility and consistency needed to support the project long into the future. The logo became the foundation of the identity, supported by a carefully considered colour palette, typography, illustration style and a suite of brand assets that work together as one cohesive system.
The logo itself was developed through a comprehensive creative process, exploring a range of concepts before refining the final identity. To ensure complete flexibility across every application, we produced a full suite of professionally prepared artwork including primary logo versions, dark and light variations, portrait layouts and single-colour formats. This ensures the identity remains consistent whether displayed online, printed on promotional material or reproduced at large scale throughout the building. Rather than creating a logo for one specific use, we developed a brand identity capable of adapting across every future touchpoint while maintaining complete visual consistency.
Creating a Brand Personality Through Illustration
One of the most distinctive elements of the NeighbourHub identity is the collection of bespoke illustrated characters created specifically for the project. These illustrations bring warmth, personality and accessibility to the brand while helping communicate the welcoming nature of the space. Rather than relying solely on photography or generic graphics, the bespoke characters provide a unique visual language that immediately distinguishes the NeighbourHub from more traditional public sector communications.
The illustrations can be used across promotional campaigns, printed literature, educational resources, social media and environmental graphics, providing a flexible creative asset that strengthens brand recognition while reinforcing the inclusive values of the project.
Developing a Visual Language That Works Everywhere
A strong brand extends far beyond a logo. Every colour, typeface, layout and graphic element contributes to how people experience an organisation.
Alongside the logo design, we developed a carefully considered colour palette and typography system that provide consistency across every communication produced by the NeighbourHub. These foundations ensure future posters, flyers, banners, presentations and marketing material all maintain the same professional appearance regardless of who produces them. Establishing these visual guidelines allows the brand to grow without losing its identity, creating a recognisable presence that can continue supporting the project for many years.
Bringing the Brand Into the Physical Environment
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was extending the brand beyond digital and printed communications into the physical environment itself. Working closely with Bury Council, we designed a comprehensive range of environmental graphics that transformed the NeighbourHub into an instantly recognisable destination within Mill Gate Shopping Centre.
Large-format window graphics create a strong presence from outside the unit, attracting attention while introducing visitors to the NeighbourHub before they even step through the doors. Inside the building, bespoke wall graphics continue the visual identity throughout the space, creating an environment that feels engaging, positive and consistent with the project’s values.
Environmental branding plays a significant role in shaping how people experience a space. Every graphic, every colour and every illustration contributes towards creating an atmosphere that reflects the purpose of the organisation while reinforcing recognition at every stage of the visitor journey.
Why Complete Branding Matters
The most successful organisations are rarely recognised because of a logo alone. They are recognised because every interaction feels connected. When someone sees a social media post, receives a leaflet, walks past a window display or enters a building, every experience should reinforce the same identity. That consistency builds familiarity, trust and confidence over time.
The Bury Works NeighbourHub demonstrates how a carefully developed brand can transform a public sector initiative into a destination that feels welcoming, professional and accessible to everyone within the community. By developing a complete branding system rather than a collection of individual designs, the project benefits from a consistent identity capable of supporting future campaigns, events and communications while remaining instantly recognisable.
Expertise in Public Sector Branding
Creating branding for public sector organisations requires a different approach to commercial design. Success is measured not only by aesthetics but by accessibility, engagement and the ability to communicate clearly with diverse audiences.
At Hypa Concept, we understand how thoughtful branding can influence the way people experience places, services and organisations. Every branding project begins by understanding the people it is designed to serve before translating those insights into a visual identity that is both memorable and meaningful. Our experience working with councils, public sector organisations and community initiatives enables us to create branding that delivers long-term value while remaining practical, flexible and easy to implement across every platform.
